Maritime Infrastructures, Coastal Protection and Sustainable Development.

Welcome

Nouakchout Mauritania, 2-4 December 2008

The Organising Committee of the Conference regrets to inform you that the conference will not take place on 2-4 December 2008 as planned. The new date will be announced shortly.

At least 60% of the world’s population lives today in area less than 6O KM from the sea coasts. These figures are growing rapidly because of the demographic effect, emigration and urbanisation. the running of uncontrolled sea side activities endeavours environmental degradation  and often ecological and socio-economic conflicts. Thus development modes that ignore coastal systems dynamics can lead to catastrophic results as shown by the eroded coastal linear, growing Netherlands floods and the huge investments granted for the rehabilitation measures.

In conjunction with the demographic context, there is a need for other factors to be taken into account such as the economic development , the rush for ports and entertainment facilities etc.., the African continent is among the most affected areas by the issue. The regions facing the ocean and with desert’s climate features are the most venerable and are the scene of considerable coastal degradation. The revision of design concepts and maritime facilities installation, coastal protection and sustainable development measures become very urgent. The issue pushes ahead the fact that the African related countries must think about the necessary remediation ways and ensure economic growth.

The Mauritania committee of CEDA-AS will organise the “International Conference 2008 (JID 2008)” in Nouakchout from the 2nd to the 4th of December 2008. the conference stands as a debate and exchange forum for the theme “Maritime Facilities , Coastal Protection and Sustainable Development”

As for every year , the CEDA-AS will organise the JID in Nouakchout Mauritania with regard to the development potentials of this country and the extension perspectives for its maritime facilities , the event will be a meeting point for researchers and industry professionals , university lecturers and government civil servants from Europe and Africa.

The main objectif for the JID 2008 is to promote knowledge exchange , experience dissemination over issues related to the problems of coastal facilities in open sea spaces.
